Canine visceral leishmaniasis in the Northeast Region of Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Brito,Flávio Gonçalves; Langoni,Helio; Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Rotondano,Tereza Emmanuelle de Farias; Melo,Marcia Almeida de; Paz,Giselle Souza da.
Abstract Background Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis that affects dogs and other mammals, including humans. Contact with dogs is a major risk factor for humans. This disease is endemic in several regions of Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania spp. infection in dogs and to correlate it with possible risk factors. Methods Blood samples were collected from 391 dogs of different ages, breeds, and both genders, coming from Campina Grande, Paraíba state, Brazil. An epidemiological questionnaire was employed in order to identify risk factors associated with the disease. Serological tests were performed using indirect immunofluorescence, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA S7®) and polymerase chain...

Detection of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in wild animals in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Machado,Gustavo Puglia; Cruvinel,Tatiane Morosini de Andrade; Cruvinel,Ciro Alexandre; Langoni,Helio.
Background Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite,Toxoplasma gondii, that affects all warm-blooded animals, including wild animals. The increased number of cases of parasitic infections is mainly due to the destruction of environmental conservation areas, which is driving wild animals out of their habitats and towards urban areas. In this study, the occurrence of T. gondii infection was investigated by the modified agglutination test (MAT) in 26 different species of run over and injured wild animals that were treated at a Brazilian university veterinary hospital, from June 2007 to August 2008.Findings Of the studied animals, six (23.1%; CI95% 11.1-42.2%) had T. gondii antibodies, with titers equal to 10...

Molecular detection ofLeishmaniaspp. in road-killed wild mammals in the Central Western area of the State of São Paulo, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Richini-Pereira,Virginia Bodelão; Marson,Pamela Merlo; Hayasaka,Enio Yoshinori; Victoria,Cassiano; Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Langoni,Hélio.
Background Road-killed wild animals have been classified as sentinels for detecting such zoonotic pathogens asLeishmaniaspp., offering new opportunities for epidemiological studies of this infection. Methods This study aimed to evaluate the presence ofLeishmaniaspp. andLeishmania chagasiDNA by PCR in tissue samples (lung, liver, spleen, kidney, heart, mesenteric lymph node and adrenal gland) from 70 road-killed wild animals. Results DNA was detected in tissues of oneCavia aperea(Brazilian guinea pig), fiveCerdocyon thous(crab-eating fox), oneDasypus septemcinctus(seven-banded armadillo), twoDidelphis albiventris(white-eared opossum), oneHydrochoerus hydrochoeris(capybara), twoMyrmecophaga tridactyla(giant anteater), oneProcyon cancrivorus(crab-eating...

Prevalence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in dogs BJM
Langoni,Helio; Fornazari,Felipe; Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Monti,Elis Talita; Villa,Fausto Baptista.
Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are parasitic diseases of global importance. The present study had the objective to determine the influence of age, sex and breed in the prevalence of antibodies against both diseases in dogs from Brotas city, São Paulo State, Brazil. Blood samples of 342 dogs were collected, and the age, sex and breed of each animal were recorded. The serological diagnosis for toxoplasmosis and neosporosis were performed using the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). The Fischer's test was used to calculate the association probability of the variables, with a = 5%. For toxoplasmosis the prevalence of antibodies was 26.9% (CI 95% 22.4-31.8%), and for neosporosis 4.97% (CI 95% 3.1-7.8%). The statistical analysis revealed a higher risk of...

The protective effects of Baypamun®HK in mice experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Cunha,Eva Laurice Pereira; Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Da Silva,Aristeu Vieira; Langoni,Hélio.
The present work aimed to verify the effects of Baypamun®HK on the survival of albinic mice, experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii RH strain, treated or not with sulfadiazine-pirimetamine, as well as on the formation and the number of brain cysts. Four groups of 20 mices were inoculated with 10(5) tachizoites, subcutaneously, and undergone to different treatments. Serum tests were carried out by indirect immunofluorescence and samples of brain, liver and lung were collected from animals who died for cytological and brain cysts examinations. After 60 days, all survivors were sacrificed. Isolated Baypamun®HK didn't present a protective action against the infection by T. gondii, but its association sulfadiazine-pirimetamine, a specific treatment...
